Trouble in Terrorist Town is a custom gametype created for Garrys Mod by Bad King Urgraine that centers around a unique form of cat and mouse deathmatch. It was originally included in the Fretta mod which is a collection of different gametypes people can vote for after each round. Eventually TTT became popular enough on its own that people began to run servers dedicated to that gametype by itself.
The point of the game is to survive and find the traitor if you are an innocent or detective and assassinate all the other players if you are the traitor. The detectives and traitors receive credits to buy special equipment to help them while the innocents can only use whatever they find on the map or dropped by a dead traitor/detective. Nobody knows who the traitor is so it’s a guessing game involving a lot of strategy and mental note taking. The only obvious non-traitor is the detective. The role you receive is randomly selected each round.
If a non-traitor goes around randomly killing people to see if they are the traitor they will lose karma and you will be karma kicked if it drops too low (along with having your maximum damage lowered the more your karma drops). I like this feature as it shows just how thorough this mod is developed to make it playable and practical, especially on servers with karma that does not reset every round.
The number of traitors is determined by the number of people playing but there is usually no more than three on loaded servers. As a traitor you could attempt to take on the entire other team through sheer force but you most likely won’t win that kind of battle. Therefore you must pretend to be innocent and make sure nobody finds out that you are the traitor. Picking people off one by one while they are alone is a good way to do that, though there are ways of clearing out rooms of people (which will also work on you and your fellow teammates if you have any). You must be careful of the detective though as he can dna scan the bodies you leave in your wake and put a beacon on the weapon you used to kill them. This means you must be cautious of who you kill, where you do it and what weapons you use as you leave a footprint which will inevitably lead the innocents and detective to finding you out. You also have a timer that you must beat in order to win, so camping will only get you so far.
As an innocent you must work to stay alive while trying also to not be accused of being a traitor. If people have reason enough to believe you are a traitor they can mutually decide to put a KOS on you (kill on sight) and then you’re screwed since defending yourself will result in innocent kills and lowered karma. You can avoid this by not doing anything a traitor would do such as not identifying dead bodies or killing other players without enough reason to do so.
That’s the basic rundown of the gameplay. There are other elements to it that you can learn about when you try it for yourself. It might sound complex on paper but it has a very easy learning curve and still depends primarily on your ability to shoot accurately in the end. If you enjoy mixing up the bland simplicity of normal deathmatch with strategy and critical thought then you’ll enjoy TTT. You can play by joining any Gmod server running that gametype.
What you’ll need:
- A copy of Garrys Mod
- Counter Strike: Source installed and mounted into Gmod
- A microphone (this gametype is heavily dependent on communication)
