Unless you live under a rock, you probably heard that Team Fortress 2 went free to play recently.
I don’t typically endorse this game too much since the gameplay has always been a bit too chaotic and filled with praying sprayers for my taste (at least on public servers) and I am not at all a fan of any game with a 15 second spawn timer. Something about TF2 is both appealing and rage inducing at the same time. I’m not exactly horrible at it like with LoL, but I have uninstalled this game at least five times now out of rage. However, that is just my personal opinion and this is still objectively one of the most solid PC shooters out there and it has a lot of fans for a reason. It has very fun and interesting gameplay with rock solid support from Valve since day one and there are plenty of modded game-types per Source game tradition to keep you interested if the stock gameplay doesn’t do it for you. There are also other mods which, for example, get rid of that pesky spawn timer. (Waiting? wtf Valve this isn’t DotA 2.)
If you previously purchased TF2 you will automatically have a premium account but if you started playing with a F2P account you will have to purchase an item from the item shop to upgrade your account to a premium one. One player actually created a mod that blacklists all F2P players from a server, thus preventing the horrid noobage the public servers have been experiencing since even 9-year-olds can afford a free game. If you don’t want to be cut from a large chunk of good servers, I suggest you purchase an item. I also suggest playing with some buddies of yours since public servers can be a bit boring in the first place. This is no casual game either. Well…okay it is, but it’s multifaceted since there is actually a very large and active competitive community for this game holding regular competitions and contests. Check out some of the videos of the more hardcore TF2 players; it gets pretty nuts.
If nothing else appeals to you about this game, you’ll at least enjoy the HWGs voice. I do.
Oh right, and TF2 is a war themed hat simulator blah blah blah award winning gameplay blah blah Valve is the best developer ever blah blah blah 9 different classes. Go download it on Steam now.
