Microsoft’s keynote may have been clunky and forced as we’ve come to expect, but we pay attention to it for the trailers and previews, not their annual verbal vomit and horrible acting. Here’s some of the highlights of Microsoft’s E3 keynote.
Starting off strong, we got a look at some actual gameplay of Halo 4. Although Cortana wouldn’t shut the hell up most of the time and the game had an overall Crysis look to it, it still seemed like it could breathe some fresh air into the lungs of an aging series if it turns out well.
Next they gave us a sneak peek of the gameplay for what will possibly go down as the most hated Splinter Cell game of all time: Splinter Cell: Blacklist. With even more action based combat than Conviction and an entirely new voice for Sam Fisher, this doesn’t seem like one the long time fans will appreciate. Perhaps it will surprise us?
Then they showed a short cinematic trailer for Gears of War Judgement, effectively telling us nothing more about the game than we already knew: Baird and Cole are in it and some locust might show up at some point for what we can only assume will be a tea party.
…as well as the cinematic trailer for the upcoming Forza: Horizon.
The new gameplay trailer for Tomb Raider was surprisingly well put together but makes the prequel seem more like a ‘beat up Lara Croft’ simulator than a game.
After non-stop chaos action sequences, we got even more of them from the first gameplay trailer of Resident Evil 6.
Finally, we got to see an upcoming title that isn’t a sequel or prequel. The brand new South Park RPG, The Stick of Truth. Finally a South Park game that actually uses the same animation style as the show, not some clunky 3D like in South Park games of the past.
And what kind of Microsoft keynote would it be without something related to Call of Duty? Black Ops 2 made its appearance as expected and it seems like Treyarch is legitimately trying to bring something new to the series. The usual unrealistic action of Call of Duty is still there though. Watching your protagonist climb into the pilot seat of a sophisticated jet aircraft while simultaneously saying he’s never flown one will never not be hilariously stupid.
