E3 previews – Sony keynote

Sony has a knack for giving us far more original content than their competitors and their E3 keynote every year typically delivers just that. Here are some of the biggest reveals from this year.

Quantic Dream, the developers behind Heavy Rain have brought us another mocap thriller by the name of Beyond: Two Souls which features Ellen Page as the actor and face for one of the lead protagonists. If you enjoyed Heavy Rain then this should provide about the same experience but with even more action this time around.

Next up we finally got a look at the gameplay of the much anticipated The Last of Us from Naughty Dog. It seems to be very similar to Uncharted but combined with The Road and with a similarly tense environment. The character interactions, voice acting and impact of each character death is really felt. The game doesn’t let you forget that you are killing other people, not just shooting waves of mindless generic baddies. Every action you take has impact and an adequate amount of detail and realism. This looks like one of the games to beat this year.

Then from Ubisoft we saw what is possibly the first video game adaptation of revolution era naval combat but also the most unrealistic interpretation of it ever created. Last I checked, clipper warships don’t have the acceleration of speed boats…

We all expected to see God of War: Ascension this year at Sony’s presentation and they delivered with some gameplay that seemed to alter very little about the game since God of War 3.

Finally we saw yet more footage of Far Cry 3 that didn’t offer anything we haven’t seen already except for cheap sexual themes injected into an already cheesy action game.

If you want a GOTY award, it's as simple as parkour + augments + Turok style dinosaur hunting.
