We’ve seen all kinds of impressive engines this past year such as CryEngine 3 used in Crysis 2 and Dice’s Frostbite 2 engine used in Battlefield 3. They were starting to make Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 seem incompetent. Now to worry though since Epic hasn’t been screwing around. Their new Unreal Engine 4 is making its debut within the next year or two. It has apparently been in development since 2003 and the potential it brings to the future of games is astounding. Just the demo alone looks better than anything we’ve ever seen in gaming.
Unreal Engine 3 has been used in countless notable games such as the Gears of War series, the Mass Effect series, the Arkham series, the Borderlands series, etc. This engine looks to be just as popular with developers because of how streamlined it is. The entire demo is done within the editor on the fly. I’m sure plenty of people are curious what kind of machine he’s running it on though.
The question is, will we get an Unreal Tournament 4 with its debut? One can only hope.
